3 Reasons Our Law Enforcement Should Learn Jiu-Jitsu

October 1, 2018

Every once in a while, a video surfaces on the internet that reminds us of what happens when police officers don’t have the gentle controlling tactics of jiu-jitsu. It’s seriously pitiful that our L.E. (law enforcement) is in many times not trained to control a civilian without excessive force or the assistance of multiple officers. While many departments do use Jiu-Jitsu in their training program this simply isn’t enough. Our L.E. should be in Jiu-Jitsu for life. Testaments to this can be found in a documentary “Jiu-Jitsu VS the World” when an officer describes how helpful simple Jiu-Jitsu was in one crazy incident he had.  Also, the Global Authority on MMA (Sherdog.com); forum on BJJ and Law Enforcement, has an ongoing discussion from L.E. officers testifying to the effectiveness of having and maintaining their jiu-jitsu skills.  If every officer learned Jiu-Jitsu their departments would have far less force complaints and officers would be much safer. Here are the top 3 reasons L.E should be training Jiu-Jitsu.

  • Jiu-Jitsu does not have to be used with excessive force. Not only this, but Jiu-Jitsu deals with what is in many ways the worst situation for an officer these days which is being on the ground (especially on their back).
  • Jiu-Jitsu keeps you healthy! We see so many officers these days whom are just completely out of shape. Jiu-Jitsu not only helps officers be more efficient in their job, but also benefits their personal life and overall health. Actively training on Jiu-Jitsu will also save the L.E. department money on future medical bills (which equates into the taxpayer (you) saving money.
  • Jiu-Jitsu is a stress killer. First, the process of learning a technique requires as much mental activity as it does physical.  Training allows for you to “let your anger out.” During rolling and drilling you can take that anger and built-up frustration and release it on the mat.  After a hard training session I always feel at ease and worry free. This would be very beneficial to our L.E because they in many ways have the most stressful job of all.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu academies are a collection of almost every type of person you can think of – doctors, lawyers, students, law enforcement, businessmen and women, and more. Every day they walk into the academy for the same reason – to get better at BJJ. These same people walk into the academy and improve their health, learning ability, and stress levels. They may not be thinking about the many benefits of BJJ that cannot be seen, but it doesn’t matter if they can see them or not – they are happening. It’s taking the lessons learned on the mat and applying them to your everyday life.
